New Chair Brings Internal Medicine and Sickle Cell Patient Care to Role

ATLANTA 鈥 October 2, 2014 鈥 Richard Snyder, M.D., joins 无码人妻 School of Medicine (MSM) as chair of the department of medicine, bringing 30 years of expertise to his new role. Effective Oct. 1,  Snyder will supervise the daily clinical operations, oversee all education, research and department efforts that support patient care for digestive diseases, cardiovascular, infectious disease, pulmonary/critical care, general medicine, nephology and rheumatology. 

 

鈥淲e are excited to welcome Dr. Richard Snyder as he brings a solid career of clinical and administrative expertise to the department of medicine,鈥 said MSM President and Dean Valerie Montgomery Rice, M.D. 鈥淲e look to his leadership to develop and expand programs that will meet the challenges of today鈥檚 complex environment of academic medicine.鈥

 

Dr. Snyder has served with the Uniformed Services University of Health, Sciences, Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Penn State College of Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, and most recently as chair of Internal Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine. His positions have included residency program director, division director, sickle cell program director, department vice chair, associate chair of clinical affairs and chair of medicine, as well as a practicing critical care physician.  

 

In addition to his activities in critical care medicine, Dr. Snyder has had a special interest in and has been recognized for his care of patients with sickle cell disease.

 

Dr. Snyder is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the College of Critical Care Medicine, member of the American College of Physician Executives and Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has received prestigious awards, including the Ameri-group Community Award for Distinguished Efforts in Promoting the Medical Home for Patients with Sickle Cell Disease, Sentara Health Network CEO Award for Distinction in Sickle Cell Disease Management, Recognition Award for Clinical Care for Sickle Cell Patients, and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Meritorious Service Medal, to name a few.

 

Dr. Snyder earned an undergraduate degree from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., and the Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. He received post-graduate medical training in internal medicine at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., and later completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
