Statement on Privacy and Confidentiality
In order to provide counseling and advocacy for students in a supportive environment, it is important to reassure students that their privacy and confidentiality will be upheld to the highest standard(s), as established by the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2014):
- B.1.b. Respect for Privacy. Counselors respect the privacy of prospective and current clients. Counselors request private information from clients only when it is beneficial to the counseling process.
- B.1.c. Respect for Confidentiality. Counselors protect the confidential information of prospective and current clients. Counselors disclose information only with appropriate consent or with sound legal or ethical justification

Your privacy is important to us, and we believe that counseling is most effective when learners feel comfortable speaking openly with their counselor. Without your written permission, no information about your contact with the Office of Counseling Services is available to anyone outside of the Director of Counseling Services or your specific counselor. This includes university personnel, parents, family members, friends, or outside agencies.
